Black Sabbath fue originado en el año 1969 en Inglaterra por el guitarrista Tony Iommi, el baterista Bill Ward, el bajista Geezer Butler y el vocalista Ozzy Osbourne. En sus inicios eran conocidos como Earth (nombre que Osbourne odiaba) hasta que empezaron a ser confundidos con otro grupo inglés con el mismo nombre, por lo que decidieron cambiarlo.
El nombre surgió cuando el grupo notó que frente a un lugar en el que ensayaban estaban proyectando una película protagonizada por Boris Karloff titulada Black Sabbath, lo cual sorprendió a Butler, quien empezó a escribir la letra para una canción llamada igual que la película, inspirado en una pesadilla que dijo tener. La letra reflejaba un mensaje muy oscuro y tenebroso, al igual que el sonido creado por Tony Iommi, lo cual terminó por inspirar al grupo a llamarse como la película y la canción, con el objetivo de crear música que se adecue a películas de horror.
